Ocean Oasis

Ocean street kitchen

Carlsbad, CA

The client bought this oceanfront property sight-unseen for the location alone. After he walked in for the first time, he called Tiffani. Brief: not too masculine, and both a party house and a place to meditate — open, entertaining-ready, with music and a dance floor in mind, but calm enough to unwind in.

What's now an indoor-outdoor jacuzzi and lounge area was previously a putting green. Retractable glass doors and curtains run the full perimeter, so the whole space can open completely for a party or close for privacy.

The aesthetic is 1950s pinup — the client's own request — brought to life through custom wallpaper: Tiffani commissioned original line-drawing artwork from a Brooklyn illustrator (whose client list includes The Met) sourced through a small jewelry shop, then had it manufactured into wallpaper in the UK. Unable to find an antique mirror she liked, Tiffani aged one herself and painted gold behind it. A bathroom tile she'd sourced online turned out to be the work of a well-known New York textile artist she later met in person at a design event — neither of them had realized the connection until she recognized her own tile in Tiffani's photos.

"The idea was to balance that incredible visual drama that plays out every day with an interior drama that could match the ocean vistas without overwhelming them."
